Meet your surgeon

Prof. Dr. Karl Philipp Kutzner

Specialized in hip and knee replacement surgery

Prof. Dr. Karl Philipp Kutzner is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in primary hip and knee arthroplasty and modern, bone-preserving implant concepts.

A particular focus of his clinical and scientific work is calcar-guided short-stem total hip arthroplasty.

His research has contributed to a better understanding of individualized short-stem positioning and fixation strategies. The scientifically published Kutzner Classification describes different implantation and fixation patterns in calcar-guided short-stem hip arthroplasty.

For international patients, this means that treatment is not based on a standardized “one implant fits all” approach. Implant choice, surgical technique and reconstruction are individually planned according to anatomy, bone quality, age, activity and medical requirements.

Hip Replacement in Germany

Modern, minimally invasive and bone-preserving concepts

Hip replacement has changed considerably over the past decades.

Modern surgery is no longer simply about replacing an arthritic joint. The aim is to restore the individual anatomy while preserving as much bone and soft tissue as reasonably possible.

At ENDOPROTHETICUM, particular emphasis is placed on:

Minimally invasive surgery
Modern surgical approaches are designed to minimize unnecessary damage to muscles and surrounding soft tissue.

Short-stem hip replacement
In suitable patients, modern short-stem implants can preserve more of the natural femoral bone compared with conventional stem designs.

Individual reconstruction
Leg length, offset, implant position and individual anatomy are considered during surgical planning.

Fast-track recovery
Modern anesthesia, pain management and early mobilization can support a faster return to independence after surgery.

Special expertise: Short-Stem Hip Replacement

Short-stem total hip arthroplasty is one of the major areas of clinical and scientific expertise at ENDOPROTHETICUM.

Prof. Kutzner has extensive experience with calcar-guided short-stem hip replacement and has published scientific research on implantation strategies, individualized positioning and clinical outcomes.

Knee Replacement in Germany

The right implant for the individual knee

Not every arthritic knee requires the same operation.

Depending on the extent and location of osteoarthritis, different treatment concepts may be considered.

These include:

  • Total knee replacement
  • Partial knee replacement
  • Unicompartmental knee replacement
  • Patellofemoral joint replacement
  • Individual implant and alignment concepts

Before recommending surgery, the clinical findings and imaging are carefully reviewed to determine whether joint replacement is necessary and which treatment concept is most appropriate.

Your treatment journey

From your first contact to your journey home

Travelling abroad for surgery should not mean organizing every part of the treatment yourself.

ENDOPROTHETICUM International coordinates the different stages of your treatment.

Surgery, rehabilitation and accommodation in one place

The ENDOPROTHETICUM Campus Concept

One of the major advantages for international patients is the close integration of the different stages of treatment.

ENDOPROTHETICUM

Specialist consultation, diagnostics, indication and surgical planning.

Clinical Treatment

Modern surgical care and postoperative treatment in a private clinical environment.

ENDOPROtherapeuticum

Physiotherapy, rehabilitation and medical training support recovery after surgery.

ENDO-Apartments

Comfortable accommodation for patients and, depending on availability, accompanying relatives during the recovery period.

Instead of moving between multiple unrelated providers, treatment can therefore be organized within one coordinated medical concept.

Only around 20 minutes from Frankfurt International Airport

Mainz is located in the heart of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region.

Frankfurt International Airport is one of Europe's largest international aviation hubs and offers direct connections to destinations throughout Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and other regions.

ENDOPROTHETICUM is located approximately 20 minutes from Frankfurt Airport by car, making specialized orthopedic treatment in Germany easily accessible for international patients.

Optional support with transportation and local organization can be discussed with our international patient team.

International Treatment Packages

Transparent costs. Individual treatment.

One of the first questions international patients understandably ask is:

“How much will my treatment cost?”

We believe that treatment costs should be transparent. At the same time, joint replacement surgery cannot always be reduced to a single fixed price.

The appropriate procedure, implant, hospital stay and rehabilitation requirements may differ between patients.

For this reason, ENDOPROTHETICUM International offers different treatment options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether I need a hip or knee replacement?

The first step is a review of your symptoms, clinical history and current imaging. If you already have X-rays or MRI scans, these can be submitted for an initial assessment.

Can Prof. Kutzner review my X-rays before I travel to Germany?

Yes. International patients can submit their imaging and medical records before travelling. A video consultation can subsequently be arranged where appropriate.

How quickly can surgery be organized?

This depends on the required procedure, medical preparation and current surgical capacity. International patients receive an individual proposed treatment schedule after their case has been reviewed.

How long should I stay in Germany?

The recommended stay depends on the procedure and individual recovery. For many international patients, the treatment journey includes several days of clinical treatment followed by rehabilitation and recovery in Mainz before travelling home.

Can I stay close to the clinic after surgery?

Yes. ENDO-Apartments provide an accommodation option within the ENDOPROTHETICUM environment and can be combined with rehabilitation at the ENDOPROtherapeuticum.

When can I fly after hip or knee replacement?

This needs to be assessed individually. The timing depends on the procedure, recovery, flight duration and individual risk factors. A recommendation is made as part of the treatment and discharge planning.

What does hip or knee replacement cost?

After reviewing your medical information, we provide an individual cost estimate. Selected standardized treatments may also be offered as defined treatment packages or with indicative “starting from” prices.

Which implant will be used?

Implant selection is based on diagnosis, anatomy, bone quality and individual requirements. Prof. Kutzner discusses the recommended implant concept with the patient before surgery.

Do you treat patients from outside the European Union?

Yes. ENDOPROTHETICUM International is designed for patients travelling to Germany from both European and non-European countries.

What happens after I return home?

You receive recommendations for your further rehabilitation and follow-up care. Where medically appropriate, follow-up consultations with ENDOPROTHETICUM can also be performed remotely.
